Sneak Peek: El Gorgo! #3 Is Coming!

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Independent

El GorgoGreat Googly Moogly! Writer Mike McGee and artist Tamas Jakab are prepping the third issue of their creation, El Gorgo! If you’re already on board with the “world’s greatest Luchador gorilla” read no further, but if you haven’t checked out these whacked-out, Kirby-inspired, cosmic adventures yet, what the heck are you waiting for?

The creators put each issue up on the El Gorgo! website for free-reading, but they also create a print version for those of us who still like to hold printed matter in our hands. And the print version is nice too - quality paper and vibrant colors make El Gorgo leap from the page. And since he has enough power and courage to kick a dinosaur in the face, you’d better duck.

The color cover and the first 11 pages of the impending third issue - “The Hour of Dagon” - are up at the El Gorgo! site right now. They’re in black and white, but they’ll be in color when the issue’s finished.

If you’re feeling like the third issue might be too difficult a spot to join in, fear not. Mike and Tamas have posted the complete first and second issues of El Gorgo! for free-reading.

Q&A: Mike McGee & Tamas Jakab – El Gorgo!

The great thing about comic books is that right there on the rack beside 70-year-old Batman and 47-year-old Spider-Man there can exist a comic that’s less-than-a-year-old and stars a butt-kickin’ luchador super-hero who happens to be (wait for it) a gorilla! Is this a great industry or what?

TAMAS JAKAB the artist and MIKE McGEE the writer are the creators behind El Gorgo! a new independent comic that debuted last year. The second issue is available as of February 20th and if you can’t find it at your local LCS (it’s not carried by Diamond), you can order it from the El Gorgo! website. But because we live in the modern age, you don’t have to order blind. Tamas and Mike have posted the complete first and second issues online for free-reading on the very sound internet principle that if you like it on the screen, you’ll love to hold it in your hands and slip it into its Mylar Snug.

In El Gorgo! #2, “Terror On Titan!,” the story takes place 10,000 years in the future as El Gorgo! and Nika face a new breed of Deep Ones. If you love the Kirby, if you love the Cosmic and if you’re thrilled by the idea of a Gorilla super-hero strong enough to kick a dinosaur in the face, this is the comic for you, and probably a couple of your friends as well. Read on, and see how Tamas and Mike do it…

“He’s a rock star, a professional wrestler, a historical novelist and a freakin’ super-hero.” That’s writer Mike McGee’s description of his and Tamas Jakab’s all-powerful hero, El Gorgo. Oh, and El Gorgo is also a gorilla, capable of kicking a dinosaur in the face “while making a fist with his foot.”

Get the idea yet that El Gorgo! is no ordinary independent comic? The first issue came out toward the end of last year and the second issue will be available on February 20th. You may not be able to find them at your LCS (the comics aren’t carried by Diamond Comics), but it’s certainly easy to find a copy. You can order both issues from the El Gorgo! website, and you can also preview complete issues of both El Gorgo! #1 and El Gorgo #2 there as well. Creators Jakab and McGee have posted them for free and easy viewing.

The second issue, “Terror On Titan!,” takes place 10,000 years in the future as El Gorgo! and Nika face a new breed of Deep Ones. Fans of Jack Kirby’s Fourth World stuff (New Gods, Mister Miracle, The Forever People), Mike Baron and Steve Rude’s Nexus, DC Comics’ 1960s Gorilla-themed issues and even the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby Thor will find lots to love here. This is a kick-butt comic that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. Print may be soon become an elderly Viking, set on fire and put out to sea, but after reading an online issue of El Gorgo! there can be only one response: I do want.
