Comic Book Jobs: Who’s Hiring? Viz!
San Francisco is a really nice city. It’s easy to get around in, has a vibrant arts culture, and excellent food. Also, home to Dashiell Hammett, one of the great American writers and Wondercon one of the best of the regional conventions.
You know who else is there? Viz Media, the publishers of Naruto and Shonen Jump.
And now the manga publisher by the bay is looking for a Royalty Financial Analyst. That does not mean you’ll be counting and investing the Queen’s money, but does mean you’ll be on the Viz Finance Team.
You’re going to need some “solid math skills” (well, duh), an ability to “think in an analytical fashion” and you’re going to need those Japanese bilingual skills to even get in the door.
You’ll be using these mad skillz to compile, prepare and review royalty reports, review licensing agreements “to ensure compliance,” process data, report to licensors and licensees, and all that fun accounting stuff. Sadly, an interest in comic books, publishing, manga, anime, etc. is not listed as a requirement, but on the plus side it’s not being put out there as a detriment either.
If counting isn’t your thing, fear not, because there’s also an opening in the legal department for another applicant with Japanese bilingual skills.
Viz wants a Bilingual (Japanese-English) Contracts Administrator. If you have paralegal experience in the entertainment industry, familiarity with the Worldmark Database, and have an active Notary Public Commission in your pocket, there are still a lot of legal experience hoops - that I can’t begin to understand - you’ll have to jump through. Liveblogging The Good Wife probably won’t help you here.
You’ll be assisting the General Counsel and other legal staff with contract administration, intellectual property filings, trademark filings, notarizing, researching and calendaring. No comic book experience necessary for this one either, but I’m sure they wouldn’t frown on it.
What I like about Viz’s listings is that they do a great job of letting you know exactly what kind of work environment you’ll be stepping in, benefits-wise. They offer: health (including chiropractic/acupuncture), dental, and vision insurances; life insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance; 401(k) plan; paid vacation and sick time; paid holidays — average 13 days/year; partially paid gym membership; flex-time; and my favorite, “full-time casual dress policy” for those of you with casual dresses just hanging in their closets.
Good luck, you well-educated BA/BS clutching job seekers!
